Hometown Hero Billy Ray Goldsmith by Ron Bailey

If you mention the name of Billy Goldsmith to any High School football fan in the state of Kentucky, you will get a smile and a football story about Coach Goldsmith. Speaking of smiles, if you ever attended one of Billy’s comedy shows, then you will smile.Billy graduated from Maysville High School in 1978 and after his stellar career for the Dogs he accepted a scholarship to play for the Eagles in Morehead. Billy Goldsmith was a three-year starter for MSU and in his senior year for the Eagles he amassed 114 tackles and 17 of those were for losses behind the line of scrimmage. Coach Goldsmith began his coaching career at Lawrence County, and it was very successful as he became the all-time winningest coach in Lawrence County football history. In 2008 he became part of the Boyle County staff as he helped guide them to back to back State championships in 2009 and 2010. The 2009 championship was double sweet for Billy as his son; Boone scored the winning touchdown in double overtime. Boone followed his Dad’s footsteps as was the backup quarterback for the MSU Eagles. Billy Goldsmith is football as he has dedicated his life to the sport, and he continues to give back to the sport he loves. If you ever get the chance to hear Billy Goldsmith speak, you will leave with a smile on your face and his words of encouragement will be a blessing to you.
