Big Games From Benharouga, but First Half Woes Down Eagles

CHARLESTON, IL —
Sophie Benharouga recorded her second double-double of the season, but the Eagles couldn’t recover from a 15 point halftime deficit, falling 60-49 at Eastern Illinois. 

The Eagles had two players score in double figures, led by Benharouga, who posted 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Charles added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Valentina Saric added nine points.

The Eagles outscored the Panthers in the second half, but were undone by a 4-for-33 shooting performance from beyond the arc. 

The Morehead State defense held Eastern Illinois shooters to only 37.3 percent from the field, including 26.7 percent from three-point range.

The Eagles return to Johnson Arena Saturday for a 1:00 PM matinee against UT Martin. 

How It Happened

Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 35-20 halftime deficit.

Morehead State started to cut into the deficit after halftime, bringing it to 48-34 by the end of the third quarter. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.

Morehead State narrowed its deficit to 55-44 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Benharouga’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 55-49 with 2:29 to go in the contest. Eastern Illinois responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way. Morehead State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
