Big Second Half Not Enough, Eagles Fall In Regular Season Finale

MOREHEAD, KY — A big second half was not enough as Morehead State fell in their regular season finale against UT Martin Saturday.

The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by Veronica Charles, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. Sandra Lin added 15 points and two steals and Valentina Saricchipped in as well with 11 points off of the bench.

Jayden Rhodes pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Morehead State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

The Morehead State defense was a problem in Saturday’s game, forcing 18 UT Martin turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Lin’s two steals led the way individually for the Eagles.

The Eagles now prepare for postseason play at the OVC Tournament beginning Wednesday in Evansville, Ind.

How It Happened

Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 45-21 halftime deficit.

After intermission, Morehead State cut its deficit to 57-38 before going on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 57-44 with 1:05 to go in the third. UT Martin countered and stretched its lead to 61-47 heading into the fourth. Morehead State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.

UT Martin kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 63-47 advantage before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 63-53 with 8:02 to go in the contest. UT Martin responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-60. Morehead State took advantage of five UT Martin turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
