Eagles Fall in Tough Road Challenge to Open Season

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Morehead State women’s basketball fell in their 2021-22 opener at Michigan State Tuesday, 93-31.

The new look Eagles went into the matchup with a Spartan team who has already received top-25 votes knowing it would be a tall task, but head coach Cayla Petree hoped the experience will help the team moving forward.

“Games like these are great opportunities for growth for our young team. We will be better in February because of tonight,” Petree added.

The Eagles stayed with Michigan State early, utilizing three pointers from Terri Smith and Jada Claude to keep the game knotted up at 8-8, before the Spartans would use a 19-0 run over the next seven minutes to pull out in front and build a lead the Eagles could not recover from.

The Eagles held their own on the glass, pulling down 23 rebounds as a team, but were undone by 29 turnovers.

Morehead State was paced by graduate student Tyler Moore, who led the team in scoring and rebounds, posting seven points and seven boards to go with an assist and a steal. Junior Paris Williams and sophomore Jada Claude chipped in seven points apiece as well, rounding out a balanced scoring attack. Freshman Morgan Browning led the team defensively with three steals in her first regular season collegiate game.

Morehead State looks to bounce back when they head to Huntington, W.VA., to take on regional rival Marshall on Friday, Nov. 19th.
