Pair of High Scoring Teams Square Off in Morehead Thursday When Men Host UT Martin

MOREHEAD, Ky. —  Coming off a rare OVC setback, Morehead State Men’s Basketball returns to action on FamilyLeisure.com Court in Johnson Arena Thursday when UT Martin visits for a 7:30 p.m. ET game. The matchup pits two of the highest scoring teams in the conference against each other.

MSU has won 14 consecutive meetings with UTM at home and is 26-4 all-time against UTM in Johnson Arena. The last time UTM defeated the Eagles in Johnson Arena was Dec. 19, 2005. Since that game, MSU is 25-5 in all games against the Skyhawks, winning nine of the last 10 overall matchups.

The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Radio Network (WIVY-96.3 FM flagship station) with Chuck Mraz and Drew Barnette. It is also available on MSUEagles.com. ESPN+ carries the game live with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin on the mics.

• Thursday’s game features four of the top seven scorers, on average, in the OVC with MSU’s Riley Minix (4th) and Jordan Lathon(7th) and UTM’s Jordan Sears (1st) and Jacob Crews (3rd).

• Morehead State is 48-12 in OVC games over the past four seasons. In the past four seasons, the Eagles are 26-4 in OVC home games (.866).

• MSU’s current 14-game home winning streak is tied for the 6th longest in Division I. The program record for consecutive home wins is 25 during the Donnie Tyndall coaching era.

• On the season, MSU now has 10 individual OVC weekly awards. Riley Minix has been Player and Newcomer three times, Jordan Lathon has three accolades and Eddie Ricks IIIwas Freshman of the Week once.

• With Jordan Lathon’s two 30-point games and Riley Minix’s one, this marks the first season since 2003-04 that the Eagles have produced 3+ 30-point efforts. Former OVC Player of the Year and MSU Hall of Fame member Ricky Minard scored 30+ five times in 2003-04.

• Drew Thelwell is just seven wins away from becoming the winningest individual player in program history. The program standard for success is 88 by Terrence Hill from 2008-09 to 2011-12.

• Riley Minix is on the Lou Henson Award Watch list, an accolade honoring the nation’s top player from Mid-Major conferences.

• Riley Minix has recorded 66 career double-doubles in his time at MSU (OVC-best 8) and Southeastern (Fla.) (58). An NAIA All-American, Minix was also the 2022-23 NAIA Academic All-American of the Year.

• Drew Thelwell ranks first in the OVC and ninth nationally with 111 assists. He has 12 games with 5+ assists, including a school-record 19 against Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Dec. 21. It’s the most by a D1 player in a game this season.

• Jordan Lathon has scored in double figures in 12 straight games, including eight 20+ point games. It’s not just been a scoring show for Lathon as he also has three double-doubles in that span and has upped his rebounding average 1.6 to 6.6.

• Kalil Thomas is only 24 points away from 1,000 for his college career, while Jordan Lathon is only 39 points shy of the millennium mark.

• This season marks the first year since blocked shots became an official NCAA stat (1985-86) that the Eagles have three players with 20+ blocks in the same season. With a majority of OVC play left, MSU already has Riley Minix (24), Dieonte Miles (22) and Eddie Ricks III (21) over the 20-block threshold.
