Football Drops 36-17 Tilt at Drake Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa – Morehead State football played tight with host Drake into the fourth quarter Saturday but a pair of late scores helped the Bulldogs pull away to defeat the Eagles 36-17 at Drake Stadium.

MSU fell to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Pioneer League, while Drake improved to 4-0 in the league.

Junior kicker Andrew Foster set the school record for consecutive PATs made with 30 with two more today. He is now 30-of-30 in 2019.

HOW THE SCORING TRANSPIRED

-Junior QB DeAndre Clayton finished off a 12-play, 70-yard drive with a five-yard jaunt at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter. The drive started after freshman Jalen Swanson collected his first career interception at the MSU 15-yard line.
-Drake connected on a 41-yard field goal with 4:02 left in the first period.
-The Bulldogs pulled ahead 9-7 with 13:37 left in the second quarter on a Drew Lauer 13-yard run. However, MSU defender CJ Austin blocked the PAT attempt.
-Just two minutes later (after an MSU interception thrown), Drake scored a 25-yard touchdown on an Ian Corwin pass. But, once again, the Eagles blocked the PAT. This time it was Hunter Burdno with the block.
Andrew Foster pulled the Eagles to within 15-10 at the half on a 41-yard field goal – his sixth straight made field goal with four of them 40+ yards.
-Following an Eagle fumble, Drake cashed in with a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-10 with 2:56 left in the third quarter.
Mark Pappas hit Landon Hurst for a passing touchdown from 16 yards away with 9:44 left in the game.
-Drake tacked on two more rushing touchdowns late in the game.

QUOTING COACH TENYER
“I told our team that we could have won that game today, we just didn’t make the key plays and left too many plays out there. But it wasn’t for a lack of effort. I was proud of our effort. For three quarters, this was a really tight ballgame.”
