Schedule Update

·   The Florida at Tennessee men’s basketball game of February 10 has been postponed due to a combination of positive tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Florida basketball program.

·   The Georgia at Texas A&M men’s basketball game of February 10 has been postponed due to a combination of positive tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Texas A&M basketball program.

·   The Georgia at Tennessee game originally scheduled for March 3 will now be played at 8:00 p.m. ET on February 10 and will be available on ESPN2.

Conference Notes

·   SEC co-Players of the Week – Ole Miss guard Devontae Shuler and Missouri guard Dru Smith were named co-Players of the Week. Shuler, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior from Irmo, S.C., averaged 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists and two steals in wins over No. 11 Tennessee and at Auburn. Shuler scored a season-high 26 points at Auburn, 23 of them coming in the second half and overtime, culminating in the game-winning shot with 0.2 seconds left. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 203-pound senior from Evansville, Ind., averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in wins over Kentucky and No. 10 Alabama. Smith ripped off a season-high 26 points to lead Mizzou past Kentucky for just the second time in program history.

·   SEC Freshman of the Week – Tennessee guard Keon Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 186-pound freshman from Shelbyville, Tenn., averaged 19 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists at Ole Miss and at Kentucky. Against Kentucky, Johnson put together a stellar performance, pouring in a season-high 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, knocking down 9-of-11 from the free-throw line, pulling in four rebounds and recording a block and a steal.

·   The SEC won the eighth annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge by winning five of the nine games on January 30. The SEC has a 25-24 lead in the event over the last five years.

·   Five SEC teams rank in the Top 30 of the NCAA’s Feb. 8 NET rankings. That is third-most in the nation.

·   Five teams are receiving mention in the February 1 Associated Press Top 25 highlighted by Missouri (10th), Alabama (11th) and Tennessee (16th). Florida and Arkansas are receiving votes.

·   Alabama’s 23 3-pointers made against LSU on Jan. 19 broke the SEC record of 22 that they had set last season and was tied by Auburn earlier this year.

·   Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes tied Phog Allen and Don Haskins for 20th on the all-time Division I wins list with his 719th win on Jan. 16.

·   Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland registered his 500th career win on Nov. 30 against Texas State.

·   Arkansas’ 142 points against Mississippi Valley St. in the season-opener are the fourth-most in SEC history.

·   Tennessee was the favorite to win the 2021 SEC championship in a preseason poll of media from around the league and nation. Kentucky was picked to finish second and is followed by LSU, Florida and Alabama. Florida’s Keyontae Johnson was selected by the media as the preseason player of the year.

·   Seventy-seven players from SEC schools were on 2020-21 NBA Opening Day rosters. All 14 SEC schools were represented and at least one SEC player is on 28 of 30 NBA rosters.

·   For the second year in a row, 12 SEC players were picked in the 2020 NBA Draft, including six who were chosen in the first round.

·   Georgia’s Anthony Edwards became the fifth SEC player to be picked first overall in the NBA Draft in the last 11 years.

·   The 2020 NBA Draft marked the fourth time (1988, 2015 and 2018) that the SEC had four lottery picks in a single NBA Draft.

·   Nine former SEC players from six different schools were on the rosters of the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals. That was more than double the total of any other conference.
